July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month![]()
Cats are curious by nature, and summertime makes it easier for them to sneak outside. Here's how to prevent your cat from getting lost — and what to do if they do slip away.![]()
Start with prevention:
• Stick to a routine: Cats are creatures of habit and more likely to return if mealtimes are consistent.
• Keep your cat indoors at night: This is when they’re more likely to roam or get into trouble.
• Make sure they have ID: Even indoor-only cats should wear a breakaway collar with ID tags or be microchipped with current contact info. One open door or window is all it takes for them to slip out.![]()
What if your cat goes missing?
• Start inside: Cats often hide in quiet, dark places. Check closets, behind furniture, and under beds.
• Search nearby: Look under porches, in bushes, garages, sheds, and even in trees.
• Use their sense of smell: Place their litter box, bedding, or a favorite blanket outside to help guide them home.
• Post and print: Put up flyers in your neighborhood and post on online platforms like Nextdoor or local lost pet groups.![]()
Keeping these tips in mind can help bring your cat home safely — or prevent them from going missing in the first place.
